Using soap and water is the most effective and common way to wash your hands, however there are times when you simply don’t have access to a sink to wash your hands. Alcohol-based hand sanitizer is a great portable alternative to this dilemma and it’s incredibly easy to make at home! Not only is making disinfectant gel a great project for kids and adults, but you’ll also save money and get a great product that will protect you and your family from germs. You can even give your little bottles of disinfectant as gifts!
The components necessary to make alcohol hand sanitizer gel are common household products, so you may already have them at home. If not, you can easily get them at any pharmacy or grocery store. You will need at least 91% pure isopropyl alcohol and plain aloe vera gel. Nothing more !To be comparable to store-bought products in terms of efficacy, your disinfectant gel must contain at least 65% alcohol . Using 91% isopropyl alcohol will place your final product in this category.
If you can find 99% isopropyl alcohol, use it instead. It is not mandatory, but it will increase the effectiveness of your final product against germs.
Aloe vera gel is also available in different degrees of purity. Buy the purest you can find. Simply refer to the label to know its level of purity . This does not affect the effectiveness of the product, but using the purest gel available ensures that the final mixture contains as few additives and chemicals as possible. The necessary tools are also very common household items, which makes this operation even easier! You will need a clean bowl, spatula (or spoon), funnel, and a recycled bottle of liquid soap or hand sanitizer. If you do not have an empty bottle to recycle, you can use any type of container, provided that it has a lid.
Measure 170 ml of isopropyl alcohol and 85 mg of plain aloe vera gel and pour both into the bowl. Use your spatula (or spoon) to stir vigorously until the ingredients are well mixed.
If you don’t feel like mixing the ingredients by hand in a bowl, you can use your food processor instead.Use the funnel to pour the mixture directly into the bottle of your choice. Replace the nozzle, cover or cap on your bottle. You now have your disinfectant gel and it is ready to use immediately!
